Made Not Manufactured Exhibition (Sept 2014)
Traditional crafts are experiencing something of a revival, as people realise the worth of owning an item that has been made with care by hand, as opposed to mass-produced. Brands like Levis and Loake are keen to promote the quality and bespoke characteristics of the products in their advertising.
I designed supporting collateral for a photography project and exhibition called Made Not Manufactured. Steve Kenward documented 46 craftspeople who are ensuring that their traditional craft skills are still relevant today – a female Boatbuilder, a glass Signwriter who counts the Kings of Leon as clients, and a Knotworker who’s building a one-man brand based on his beard alone. They all enthusiastically embraced the project and kindly allowed Steve into their workspaces to shoot them.
The exhibition was part of the Shoreditch Design Triangle programme of events during London Design Week.
Steve has since had his work featured in several publications: Port Magazine, Hole & Corner, Its NiceThat, Boing Boing, Smith Journal.
A bit of a shameless plug, as the photographer is my other half! But hey – they’re great shots! Check out the project and see more of his work here stevekenward.com

I had the pleasure of spending two days at Olympia, feasting my eyes
on some beautiful work in the Crafts for Advertising category.
